The Star of David

Do you think stars get lost on the way to the sky?

I think maybe they do

But cannot say I know why

Only that I met one once

A boy with wild hair

And a smile that hurt to see

For it made even the brilliance of the sun go dark

I watched him from my safeguard window

Thought of him through the years

For life had not been easy

It is not always so kind

He ran through overgrown fields and moors

Looking for answers I could not for him find

When under one moon he reached above

Took his eyes up from the ground

Thrashed about with swords and invisible ghosts

Bloodied up by a head full of why’s

I watched him from my bedside

Until I had a passing thought

And tip-toed down the hall

And into the night

The grass was warm beneath my bare feet

Lifted me higher with each step

And I reached the star boy

With lips so sweet

Stared him in the face

Lifted my fingertips

And pulled them apart

As his mouth opened,

A deep light escaped

And knocked me to the side

I fell on solid earth

As his arms and legs opened wide

When I awoke

I was alone

The boy nowhere to be found

But a flickering made me turn

And I glanced up at the sky

There,

Brighter than bright

The Star of David

Burning with all his might

Made of stardust

Breathed into existence by God himself

The boy was beautiful beyond words

With six pointed sides

And that joyous smile full wide

Tonight, I lay on my bed

Window open to catch the summer breeze

So many thoughts running through my head

Dodie Clark on vinyl

Singing words my lips meet

As the wind carries the tune

“There's nothing to do right now but try

There are a hundred people who will listen to you cry

And I get that they don't get it

But they love you so much that you won't regret it”
